Nandina, shrubs with highly branched leaves that produce pale green to bright red foliage in fall and winter, belong to the Family Berberidaceae. The berries are poisonous. Nandina domestica, known as heavenly bamboo, is a slender, leggy shrub known for its charming red berries and reddish fall foliage that can reach ten feet. The flowers appear in late spring. The showy berries mature in fall and persist into winter. The Gulf Stream Nandina has metallic blue-green summer foliage that forms a large compact mound. It will grow three feet high. Firepower Nandinas have ruby red hues in the winter that transforms through yellow, orange and green colors the rest of the year. |
