 Lilium

The North American Lily Society organizes the genus lilium of the family Liliaceae into nine divisions: Asiatic, Martagon, Candidum, American, Longiflorum, Trumpet or Aurelian, Oriental, Interdivisional and Species.

Asiatic hybrids originated in Asia and American hybrids in North America. Martagon hybrids are turban shaped with severely reflexed perianths. Candidum, dazzling white, hybrids produce fragrant flowers. The Easter lily is of the Longiflorum division. Oriental hybrids produce huge scented flowers.

Distinguishing characteristics of the lily bulb is a deficiency of a protective outer coating and a lack of a dormant period.

Lily flowers vary in size, shape and color but always have six tepals and six anthers.
