 Lantana

Lantana camara or the common lantana, Lantana hybrida or hybrid, and Lantana montevidensis or the trailing lantana are woody shrubs with large, rough leaves that belong to the Verbenaceae family, order Lamiales. The foliage is abrasive and smells of sage when crushed.

The bright blossoms attract butterflies. Differences in the hybrids vary with size and color of the flower. Lantana flowers can be multicolored with color combinations of pink and yellow, rose and gold, yellow, pink and purple, or solid colors of orange, red, yellow, pink, or white. After the flowers are spent small black berries appear and are poisonous.

Lantana is sensitive to frost and does not survive below 28 degrees Fahrenheit. It grows best in full sun.
