Hyacinths have uniformly shaped flowers, distinguished colors, and a favorable fragrance. Daffodils, narcissi and some tulips planted in the fall bloom early with the hyacinths. Hyacinths make good border plants and are useful for indoor forcing during the winter months. The flowers of the Hyacinthus orientalis have ten-inch spikes of star shaped flowers, commonly one spike per bulb, accompanied by sword like green leaves. Bulbs planted in the fall like a sunny, well-drained area and cannot withstand extreme frost. Hyacinths can be toxic if ingested in large quantities. Delft Blue is an exquisite bright blue hyacinth with a fragrant scent. |
