 Dicentra

The Bleeding Heart or Dicentra spectabilis grows two to four feet tall. A herbaceous plant that does well in a shade garden, the Bleeding Heart flowers in late spring to early summer and subsequently dies down to the ground.

The flowers are pink and the petals slightly united into flattened, heart-shaped, or spurred corollas. The deep-pink blossoms hang profusely under arching stems. The leaves are fernlike and elegant.

Bleeding Hearts make up the genus Dicentra of the family Fumariaceae.

The entire plant is toxic and can cause contact dermatitis.
