The amaryllis is an exotic bulb that usually has two stems. Each stem produces four huge, trumpet-like flowers. The hybrid amaryllis, also known as Hippeastrum, belongs to the family Amaryllidaceae. This family has narrow, flat leaves and lily like flowers borne on separate, leafless stalks. Seed, offsets or cuttage can propagate the amaryllis, prized for its huge showy flowers. Amaryllis bulbs planted in pots in the fall bloom in eight to twelve weeks and provide vibrant color throughout the winter indoors. Planted amaryllis bulbs outdoors in the Virginia Garden do well, flower in late May and early June, and appear to be deer proof. The amaryllis, named after a shepherdess in Greek mythology, means sparkling, obviously referring to the attractive blooms. |
