Main Street in Yorktown, Virginia is positioned on a bluff and flanked by historic colonial buildings. The most illustrious son of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson Jr., signer of the Declaration of Independence and wartime Governor of Virginia lived in the Nelson House. An adjacent restored formal garden adjoins the 1711 built Georgian manor. Located on the corner of Main and Comte de Grass streets is the Digges House, a well preserved example of Georgian domestic architecture. Dr. Corbin Griffin, a physician, stocked the Medical Shop with homeopathic medicines. A ferryman, Thomas Pate, built the nearby low eaved cottage in 1699. Sea captains called at the Customhouse to pay duty on their cargoes. The Sessions House was built in 1692. |
